Wicklow has been included in a ‘Best of the World 2023’ list of destinations by the famous National Geographic magazine

Wicklow has been included in a ‘Best of the World 2023’ list of destinations by the famous National Geographic magazine.

National Geographic has compiled its annual Traveller’s ‘Best of the World’ list recommending 35 destinations for 2023. The selection is split into five categories: Adventures, Culture, Nature, Family and Community.

The list highlights some of the most exciting and exceptional experiences on the planet, 25 of those selected by National Geographic global editors, and another 10 selected by the UK edition. Wicklow is featured as one of the top family destinations alongside San Francisco, Trinidad and Tobago, Colombia, Manchester, Switzerland and Bath.

The article talks about the Wicklow Mountain trails that are ideal for hikers and bikers. It also includes Wicklow’s stately Palladian mansions, wild waterfalls and our unique coastline. Special mention is given to ‘Beyond the Trees – Avondale,’ its canopy walk, 12-story tower and Ireland’s tallest slide.

“We are absolutely delighted to have Wicklow recognised as a fantastic family destination. Wicklow has so much to offer with plenty of outdoor activities and great attractions for all to enjoy,” says Brian Gleeson, Chief Executive of Wicklow County Council and Chairman of Wicklow County Tourism. “Recognition from National Geographic is a huge achievement and a great coup, offering international exposure.”

Cllr Tommy Annesley, Cathaoirleach, Wicklow County Council, added: “The tremendous investment from Coillte and Failte Ireland at Avondale is proving extremely successful. Beyond The Trees is becoming one of the leading attractions in Ireland, and deservedly so.”
